Overall odds = chance of winning any prize on one ticket.

Multiplier (Power Play / Megaplier) applies to most non-jackpot prizes, with a few exceptions.

Powerball Prizes and Odds

How prizes work

Match your numbers to win. Add Power Play to multiply most non-jackpot prizes.

Quick takeaways about Powerball prize odds
  • Most winners aren’t jackpot winners. The smaller prize tiers hit much more often than 5 + Powerball.
  • Power Play multiplies most non‑jackpot prizes, but not the jackpot.
  • Match 5 is special: it becomes $2,000,000 with Power Play (it doesn’t scale beyond that).

Expected value (EV) — a quick reality check

EV is the average return per ticket across all possible outcomes (including the many times you win nothing). For most jackpot games, the EV is usually well below the ticket price — but very large jackpots can change it more than people expect.

Coming soon on WorkTheNumbers: EV by jackpot size + how often each tier appears in real draw windows.

Likelihood at a glance

A simple way to read odds: smaller “1 in X” happens more often. Here’s the basic shape of the game:

For the exact probabilities, use the table’s Odds column above.

Odds vs. real outcomes over time

The math (odds) doesn’t change — but real-world outcomes do fluctuate in streaks and clusters. That’s why two 100-draw windows can “feel” very different even with identical odds.

Powerball odds FAQ

What are the odds of winning the Powerball jackpot?
The jackpot requires matching all main balls plus the bonus ball. The official per‑ticket jackpot odds are listed in the first jackpot row of the table above.
Do the odds change if nobody wins for a while?
No — each draw is independent. Past results do not make future results more or less likely.
Does Power Play / Megaplier improve my chances of winning?
No. Multipliers change payouts for most non‑jackpot prizes, but they do not change the probability of matching numbers.
What’s the easiest prize to win?
Usually the “bonus ball only” tier is the most common. Check the odds column for the smallest “1 in X” values among the prize tiers.

Tip: If you’re looking for recent winning numbers, visit Powerball results.

How to read the table

  • The Match column shows how many main balls + the bonus ball you hit.
  • The Odds column is the approximate probability of that exact outcome.
  • The multiplier columns show what you’d receive if you added the optional multiplier on your ticket.

What the odds actually mean

  • Most common win is usually “bonus ball only” (small prize).
  • Jackpot odds are the toughest because you need every ball to match.
  • If you’re comparing games, focus on overall odds + non-jackpot tiers, not just the jackpot number.

Power Play details

Power Play multiplies most non-jackpot prizes. The jackpot (5 + Powerball) is not multiplied.

The $1,000,000 prize (match 5) becomes $2,000,000 with Power Play and does not scale beyond that.
