What separates the two biggest lottery records?
This is not a verdict on which game is “better.” It is a rule-aware look at how their stored drawing histories differ once pool sizes and incompatible eras are accounted for. “Stored record” means the historical drawings currently available and validated in the Work The Numbers database.

The immediate answer
Their average drawing shapes are remarkably close.
After normalizing every drawing to its own rule format, average spread occupies 66.3% of the possible range for Powerball and 66.5% for Mega Millions. The visible difference is smaller than a raw-range comparison would suggest.
Studied record
Two archives of different lengths.
Powerball currently draws Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday; Mega Millions draws Tuesday and Friday. Schedule frequency affects how many records accumulate in a year, but our rates use drawings—not calendar days—as the denominator.

Rules explain part of the picture
Pool size changes the opportunity for patterns.
Mega Millions has five represented main-number pools in this database; Powerball has three. Smaller pools give any two drawings more opportunity to overlap and make adjacent values somewhat more common. That is why we show era-level details in Rule-Era Comparisons rather than treating either archive as one timeless format.
What this record cannot establish
Neither history is more predictable.
Differences in normalized spread, consecutive pairs, odd/even composition, or repeats do not identify a future winning number. They also do not establish a “better” game; prize value and odds are different factual questions covered in the Odds Explorer.
How we calculated this
Normalize first, aggregate second.
Each valid drawing is evaluated using the number pool in force on its date. We normalize sum and spread within that pool, then average those normalized values by game. Consecutive and odd-number rates use drawings as their denominator. Previous-draw overlap resets at every rule boundary.
Limitations
Coverage is substantial, but not gap-free.
The Powerball archive starts February 3, 2010; Mega Millions starts May 17, 2002. Both have missing scheduled dates in represented history. Confirmed, corrected, and provisional canonical rows are eligible; void rows are excluded. Every currently analyzed row is confirmed. Current-format details and schedule descriptions may change with official game rules. Jackpot comparisons are omitted because only a handful of stored rows contain jackpot amounts.
