Rule-Era Comparisons
When the lottery rules changed, the meaning of the numbers changed too.
A total of 200 does not occupy the same place in a 59-number pool and a 69-number pool. This study puts eight represented Powerball and Mega Millions formats on comparable scales before describing how their drawings differ. “Stored record” means the historical drawings currently available and validated in the Work The Numbers database.

The immediate answer
Larger pools made consecutive numbers less common in the stored record.
Powerball’s observed consecutive-number rate moved from 32.8% in the represented 5/59, 1/39 period to 26.3% in the 5/69 era. Mega Millions shows the same broad descriptive direction across its represented formats. That is consistent with pool geometry; it is not evidence that the machines developed different behavior.
Why the raw values fail
A bigger number pool creates bigger possible sums and spreads.
We locate each drawing between its format’s minimum and maximum possible sum and spread. A normalized sum of 50% means the drawing landed halfway across that era’s possible total range, regardless of whether the pool ended at 52, 59, 69, 70, or 75.

What changed—and what did not
The opportunity changed more clearly than the drawing process.
With five selections drawn from a larger main pool, neighboring values and immediate repeats have fewer opportunities to occur. The tables report observed differences; they do not claim that a rule change caused a statistically significant departure from random drawing. Odd/even balance stayed near the intuitive midpoint of 2.5 odd numbers per drawing across most represented eras.

How we calculated this
Every row is classified by its drawing date.
We validate five distinct main numbers and one bonus number against the configured format in force. Sum and spread are normalized to their exact possible ranges. Consecutive rate is the share of drawings containing at least one adjacent main-number pair. Repeat rate is the mean count shared with the immediately previous valid drawing in the same era.
Limitations
Descriptive differences are not predictive signals.
Coverage begins with the oldest represented format in the database, not the origin of either game, and historical schedule gaps remain. Small eras—especially the current Mega Millions format—have less stable summaries. Confirmed, corrected, and provisional canonical rows are eligible; void rows are excluded. Every currently analyzed row is confirmed. No result changes the fixed chance attached to a valid future combination.
